DAVE'S STORY

SPORT AND ATHLETICS

For as long as I can remember, sport has been a central theme in my life.  Watching, studying, learning, competing.  From youth through high school I competitively played tennis, golf, hockey, baseball, basketball, football and rugby.

Naturally, this background led me to a career where I am able to work with like minded, highly motivated athletes.

During my career as a movement coach/trainer I’ve had the privilege to work with professional athletes from numerous sports including the NFL, NBA, MLB, PGA, AVP, USASW, along with NCAA athletes.

I’ve been fortunate to do this at world class facilities - The University of Texas, Train 4 The Game in Austin, Texas and Meyer Institute of Sports in Los Angeles, California. This has given me unique insight and experience regarding how some of the best athletes in the world train for their sport.

ELITE ATHLETES AND ELITE PERFORMANCE

Many elements must come together to achieve optimal performance.  But when we breakdown the components required for excellence in any sport, training the body to move efficiently is a high priority.

Precision, focus and discipline are themes that echo with elite athletes - when these are matched with  specialized training, we can move closer to gaining an edge on the competition and reaching higher levels of performance.

Learning how to create this edge for athletes has been the focus of my professional career for over a decade.

CYCLE OF DYSFUNCTION

My understanding of movement, training and performance is rooted in my own experience as an athlete.  Like many other athletes, I suffered a series of significant injuries.  My desire to perform and achieve success in sports led me to ignore all the warning signs and just keep pushing my body to its limit.

THE RESULT: Numerous injuries, arthroscopic hip surgery, rehabilitation setbacks, and 7 years of chronic pain and dysfunction.  During this time I would wake up everyday only to feel my left hip “lock up”.  Each day I would spend hours trying to find solutions to feel better.  All with little success.

I had to battle the feelings of frustration, anger and pessimism. I would need to call on the lessons that sports taught me to get out of this cycle.

PLAN AND PROGRESS

After several years of pain and dysfunction, I finally sensed a level of progress.  A small improvement created a major shift.

My progress was born out of work: consistent, purposeful work.  The approach was based on a detailed understanding of Applied Functional Science, a powerful framework to understand human movement taught by The Gray Institute.

This approach focuses on the entire body and looks to uncover the underlying issues to the problem rather than blindly "Chasing the Pain".  I learned how to listen to my body and make appropriate adjustments EVERY DAY.

Assess, apply and adapt.  This framework allowed me to evolve the plan to ensure that I could enjoy continued progress.

The Result

I was able to play sports - basketball, tennis, golf, etc. at a high level once again.  And, more importantly, I was able to train elite athletes again without limitations.  Instead of a second and third major surgery, I was able to pursue the career path that had been the primary goal of my adult life.

The entire experience taught me many lessons and as a result I gained a new level of confidence to overcome obstacles with my body and my mind.

Although my journey started out with a focus on my own body out of necessity, this changed over time.  I began to take everything I learned and channel it to help others create their own breakthroughs.

I became focused on blending all my experience professionally and personally to create a better way to train athletes.

My goal became to give highly motivated athletes the edge on their competition to further excel in their sport.
